Re: POLL !!! - pebble finish sousaphone

i like my horn to look old- primarily brass band & vintage jazz gigs on this horn.
The faux finish is with rust-oleum. The hand-hammered colors. I spay two colors at once and blend with a rag dampened with mineral spirits.

Re: Thoughts on this lathe?

I have an Atlas/Craftsman 101 6". It's fun to learn on and fiddle around on, but once you get going, you'll want something larger. I just bought a South Bend 10". The cost depends on what part of the country you're in. I paid $2100 for the SB, but you may find one for around $1500. I paid two movers ...

Re: something that might (??) improve high range accuracy

Well... this reminds me I need to clean every horn I own. :(
What method was mentioned a few months ago - best cleaner for green lime build up? I have acquired a horn that was not played for 10-12 years. When I finally got the slides off, the brass interior was solid green.

Re: WTB - Miraphone 184 BBb

I have a miraphone BBb late 50s vintage. 4 rotors. I think it is a 185, but it could be a 184. I have plans to sell it, but I need some time to figure out what it is. It has been lacquered and is in great playing condition.

Re: Lathe Biz

Thank you so much, Eric. This is just the info I needed. I got a look today. It's in great condition and owned by a retired engineer who takes very good care of things. 10" South Bend with a 4.5 bed. This is my chance to have a really nice lathe. I spent the summer after my freshman year working in ...

Serenade for Tuba & Piano

Is anyone familiar with this piece: Serenade for Tuba and Piano by William Schmidt I just acquired a stack of music and thought this looked interesting. I think I also have it somewhere in my library. I'm not seeing a recording online. It looks like a simple, short, multi-movement piece, but does ...

I am fixing to look at a Southbend Lathe. Southbend model 10 K Lathe 4 1/2’ bed m W Taper Attachment. 3 & 4 jaw chucks. Runs as it should. Single phase. $2100 Can anyone comment on this? I have a small Atlas/Craftsman 101. I have always wanted to step up. I mainly just want to dabble. I want to make ...

This might be your guy. The only job listed was military. There is a phone number listed on Been Verified. you may want to reach out to complete your file on the history of the horn. ays Charles Coffinger was born on 12/22/1936 and is 87 years old. Right now, Charles Coffinger lives in Tacoma, WA ...

Re: lathe question

I missed the sale on the $500 SB, but now I have found a 10" SB with a 4.5 bed that includes a taper (I don't know what that does yet). It is listed at $2200, which is more in line with everything on eBay. I am a little undecided about taking this on, but I have fond memories of working out on the ...

Re: lathe question

I'm really not wanting any new stuff but this South Bend is only $500 which is about the best price I've seen. I have an extra Atlas chuck that will probably fit. I would like to have it in the shop for my grandson.

lathe question

I currently own an Atlas/Craftsman 101 6" lathe. Years ago, I had a chance to use some large lathes and understood the advantages of a larger, heavier lathe. I have a chance to pick up a South Bend 6" or 9". The buyer says "needs a 6" inch head stock" I don't see a 6" listed for South Bend. Maybe ...

Re: Vintage 185 Mirafone outcome

Okay. I like to camp out in my cozy spot sometimes because my wife likes to sleep with the TV on. I designed and built that "built-in" 30 years ago when we added on to the house. 185 or 186? I'm not an expert on this subject, but I can tell you the bore of this BBb is smaller than my 186 CC, but my ...

Vintage 185 Mirafone outcome

Yesterday, I went to a house to look at some instruments the local music shop told me about. Before viewing them, I found out it was a Mirafone BBb and a nice German bass. I got to the house and started with the tuba—everything was frozen and locked up. The open bugle did play really nice. We d ...

Re: Vintage BBb Mirafone

Thanks, this makes sense. When I put my mouthpiece in, it only went in about a half inch or 5/8s maybe. I noticed when I played it it felt different-smaller than other 186 BBb that I have played. It did feel REALLY GOOD. It has the Miraphone MAGIC! #1171 must be late 50s!

Re: Vintage BBb Mirafone

I just got by to test this. Could this be a 185? It just seemed a little tighter than my 186 CC. Everything is frozen up (slides and rotors), but I could play the open bugle. It felt really good, and it slurred through the partials very smoothly. There was some play in the rod (mostly on the 1st ...

Vintage BBb Mirafone

It looks like I will offer assistance to a couple selling some instruments—a tuba and a bass. I have not seen or played them yet, but I hope to get a look next week. The instruments have been saved for some time for sentimental reasons, but now it is time to sell. I know little about the history or t ...
