Yes, try a heavier-gauge string. Also, elevate the E string a bit. Sometimes I will elevate each string slightly higher from G to E... just a hair. I do this even more on my upright setup.
Round-wounds will give more overtones, and flats are usually less resonant. I use half-rounds quite often ...

Re: Jazzy Brass Quintet
The search is going reasonably well. Not really producing that much because I'm now convinced there's just not much in print/published. I have come to grips with the fact that the best jazz arrangers & composers are not inclined to score for brass quintet or any other classical chamber group. I have ...

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I'm starting in on my bucket list early!
I'm looking for some really hip jazz arrangements for a brass quintet. I have been all over the web, and I have only found a handful of Jack Gale arrangements on the Canadian Brass site that spark my interest. artofmusicsound.com seems to ...

Re: Making your own mouthpiece
I purchased a very nice South Bend lathe a year or so ago. It is certainly large enough to turn a tuba mouthpiece. Looks like a piece of 2-inch stock will cost around $40 for the 4 inches I need for a mouthpiece. - If I buy a 14-18 inch length for a couple of hundred dollars.

Roger Bobo Mastering The Tuba bk1
I have given this method a little time, off and on, since I bought it long ago. I have the original edition. It seems like studies I’ve had over a long period of time always have a different meaning and effect on me when I revisit them.

Re: “elephant whinney”
I'll never forget making the elephant "call" back in high school. Two sousaphone players facing each other hold the bells tight together and blow like hell. It is glorious! I guess we invented that version, as I had never seen it before,

Hate to see a tuba go!
I have not played this horn much since I got it. A little to heavy for me and I have a Wessex BBb helicon that I like for jazz gigs... plus the recently acquired 184 has all my attention.
This 1961 Reynolds Contempora BBb recording bass really plays well. The high range has a great vibrant feel and ...

Re: FB: cool old Cerveny $1,100 (Hillsdale, MI)
I had one of these years ago. The tone is amazing. The build is incredible as well. Best I could tell, mine was from around 1900. The Vitak emblem was present but a little more ornate. At that time, I found articles on the web discussing the unique brass alloy of these instruments, accounting for ...

3/4 bag needed
i'm looking for a nice-fitting bag for my Miraphone 184. A 3/4 Gard wheelie bag would be nice.
14-inch bell. Would like close fitting and lightweight.
Thanks, Tim

Re: Holton sousaphone tuning bits
Yes, someone here was looking but not anymore. I have a neck and bits as well. New old stock and very nice. Seems like when you need them you can't find them (at a reasonable price), and if you have them, you can't sell them.

Re: price of tubas & snare drums
The individual who purchased this drum was the drum tech on a recent Sheryl Crow tour, works for a major percussion company, and has also been affiliated with a custom drum shop. He told me it's the brass and shell that make these 20s-era drums so special. He collects these models because of the ...

price of tubas & snare drums
Well, now that I'm selling off my percussion & vintage snare drum collection, I might just buy me another tuba.
Here's a drum I've had for a long time—certainly one of my most collectible.
I discounted this because someone stripped the black lacquer off, and the buyer was standing in front of me ...
