Re: lathe question

A South Bend 10" with a 5c collet closer is a very handy machine. I’ve never used a lathe with collets - only three, four, and six-jawed chucks - would think the attraction is if you’re doing a lot of work with the same diameter round stock. And perhaps more rigid mounting in the headstock. Ge ...

Re: Eastman 534 unboxing and reaction

There still are some squirrelly things up above the staff, but when Mark and I were comparing notes, I found them to be rather mouthpiece-sensitive in that range. Or, it's me that's mouthpiece-sensitive in that range. Pulling mine out to do that note-comparing meant that the Hirsbrunner is going to ...

Re: ergonomics and 6/4 piston "York"-style C tubas

What you do is to call the section of mouthpipe - that goes inside the bell and back out - the "resonator". It would need a fairing over it, like an airfoil, to minimize turbulence. Then, you could call it an anti-turbulence resonator. If you sell it well enough, people will install just the ...

Re: tenor tuba check offs

I've concluded that even the top orchestral musicians put together a career of side hustles. They teach at the local university, they maintain a studio of students. In the off-season, they teach at a summer music program. They sub in other orchestras as available. And more and more of them maintain ...

Re: A question of "playability'.....

For me, playability means that reasonable general fundamentals are enough to get a good sound with acceptable intonation. Professional tubas are not necessarily easier to play, but they get marginally better results for people bringing special skills in addition to reasonable general fundamentals ...

Re: Rare Tuba Mouthpieces

Fred Young's mouthpieces are rare and interesting, but not because I'd want to routinely play one. But I can't think of a single "rare" mouthpiece I've played that isn't matched or bettered by something currently available, if one just wants something to play. Rick "avoided the never-ending ...

Re: not a poll... ie. the only way to respond is with words.

I read a lot of books (words, not music). While a write when needed and consider myself competent but not artistic, I really enjoy the words written by those who are as good at writing as I am at reading and appreciating what they have written. I'm not a composer, and if I'm going to play an ...

Re: ergonomics and 6/4 piston "York"-style C tubas

My Holton has the standard (for PhatBAT's) partial leadpipe wrap, but one would need gorilla arms to reach the valves if it didn't. But, you know, that floor stand seems to solve a lot of the problems people report with this issue. I use a stand for bigger contrabass tubas even when they have the ...

Re: ' any (actual) Bach cello suite scholars out there?

Unrelated to the Bach Cello Suites specifically, but Harry Salotti just published "200 Melodies for Tuba" as an online pair of volumes. Some of the tunes are for beginners and some are just too cheesy. But there's a wide mix of genres including selections from Baroque, Classical, and Romantic ...

Blake, I was thinking of the applied shield logo instead of it being stamped. And also the small bell (relative to the body).

Both the ball and the figured keel look old to me.

Re: Interesting Schuster / Markneukirchen Eb on eBay/Turkey

The one on offer doesn't look as old as the one you linked, which appears to me to be at least a hundred years old, and likely even older to before WWI. But I could be totally misreading the clues. Schüster is one of those mid-size manufacturers that was big enough to have a real factory (steam- ...

Re: Gig bag reinforcement

Back when I owned the Sanders/Cerveny dent magnet, I was using an Altieri bag for it, and the particularly vulnerable spot was the outer branch, which is usually what hits the ground first when carrying the bag by the handle. (We're talking mid-80's.) I went the fabric store and then the outdoor ...
