Re: POLL: Holton 6/4 BB-flat model BB345 tuba - 5th valve?

I like my B-flat (and E-flat) tubas either have 5 valves or 4 valves and compensated. I hardly ever push or pull slides, I find false tones and slide pulling utterly slow for what today's composers write for wind band/ brass band. I have added 5th valves to 4 valve instruments for this reason, and ...

The company Leopold Müller GmbH is the industry reference: https://www.mueller-lack.com/ Closer North is probably Büchel in Bonn, they offer Lacquering on their website, but I don't know if they do it themselves: https://buechelmusik.de/unsere-taetigkeiten/ Also Adams in the Netherlands can offer t ...

Slightly off-topic, but this guy's videos are all about Bach's handwriting calligraphy, great stuff!
Some very nice insights in differences between the original compared to copied versions.

Re: Kurath F — Reconsidered…

but the tone is richer/thicker on the york. I play my N Star with fairly large (Bb/CC) mouthpieces, like a Tilz M1 or TheBerlinerTuba's Helleberg copy. It will never sound as fat as my Besson/ B&H Eb but it does give the Miraphone some nice deeper voice. Did I mention I LOVE my Norwegian Star ...

I played the big BBb at Klingspor in Freiburg couple of years ago and it's a great instrument, I wouldn't mind owning one as my big tuba!
(Andreas is a nice guy as well!)

I would personally not buy any tuba like this without trying it though...

Es ist offensichtlich, dass die Werkstatt nur Tuben für Amateure und Studenten herstellt, da dort keine Kontrabasstuben in C-Länge aufgeführt sind. ... This kaiser is really handsome... https://www.hsm-brass.de/tuben/b-kaisertuba.jpg Here's the sound check: https://www.youtube.co ...

That's just how I hold my E-flat 3 + 1 comp. I appreciate the picture demonstration. It's easy to be grateful that someone is doing such a good job of showing how easy it is to hold and play - specifically - a product that I sell, but really it's sort of like the left-wing // right-wing thing: you ...

Re: Threading the needle of mouthpieces for an Eb tuba

I use The Berliner Tuba BT-H Helleberg copy on my Miraphone Norwegian Star. (Solo or quintet)
The Tilz Nea M1 also does a good job on that tuba, when it needed a bit more push.

For the B&H Imperial Eb I use a Tilz WH-B1. (for Brassband)

But that's just my 2 eurocents ...

Re: Appropriate tubas for brass band

At Foden's we have 2 Yamaha's (BBb) and 2 Besson EEb in the section. Personally, I've tried many different tubas in brass bands, and no one frowns upon it but they just don't work as well as a 3+1 comp for the full on stuff. Blend, technical passages, sound are all better FOR THIS SETTING. I've ...

Re: Piston block angle

I believe if you see really little people - like 10 years old - playing tuba, they'll appear more comfortable playing top valves. It's the way to go. Not on a Besson BBb 3+1 compensator... they would need to choose either blowing into the mouthpiece or touching the valves, but not at the same time ...

Are there any contrabass ones that are easily playable and still sound like a trombone - rather than a euphonium or tuba...??
Yes, Mike Johnson Custom, in every key you want:
Bass and contrabass, rotor or piston, compensated or not and even a full double Eb-Bb version!
