Re: Yamaha C Tuba YCB-623S

Best guess: Nigeria, king of scammers. At least he's not a princess who needs to sell it in order to get her dear grandfather released from being a political prisoner, or to pay for her poor child's brain surgery.

Re: 4/4 or 5/4 BBb Tuba

It's going to be interesting to see if a trend is starting, to go from CC to BBb. There really is a difference in what you can get out of an otherwise equivalent pair. I am tickled pink with my BBb. Admittedly I have not owned an equivalent CC, but I like what I hear. Maybe some day I'll get a crack ...

Re: Besson false tones

That many years ago, I think they really hadn't figured out all that much about bugle design, and perhaps they weren't even thinking about playing them in that range. And think that tuba in the video looks bigger on him than my Hagen does on me!! Either he's a pretty short guy or that is a Monster ...

Re: Helene - everyone okay?

I just saw on the news what happened in Asheville -- astonishing; I would have thought at that altitude and location that a hurricane, any hurricane, was just a really windy rainstorm. Wow; I saw there were locations that got 30 inches of rain, and many with 20. That sounds like Katrina level damage ...

I can't see the tubing/valves well enough to tell but that looks like a Firebird to me.

Oh I don't want to buy one -- was just curious as usual. And I find a 183 totally playable, or at least mine is.

Re: Mouthpiece for a Smaller student.

As someone probably not a lot bigger, or maybe not at all bigger -- the JK 8C and the Wick 5 come to mind as mouthpieces that are more tuba cups than a 32E (I have one of those and bleah) and still 30.5 mm diameter.

Re: Miraphone bags

My NStar-playing friend always carries his (in a cordura Chronkite) using one strap over his shoulder, which would subject it to doorway whacks, but after at least 10 years he has no bag-caused damage. The closest he came to damage was when a lady with a camera was trying to get a picture of her ...

Re: Laziness Guilt

Is there such a thing as a bell-front F? Or a bell-front Eb for that matter? Seems there are occasions when those would be perfect.

Re: 4/4 or 5/4 BBb Tuba

I agree teacher not a bad idea, but the late response is a size thing -- the bigger the tuba the more you have to play ahead of the beat if you want the sound to be on the beat. Everybody does it, but some may not be aware of it. It's like every note starts like a grace note; just change your habit ...

Re: Miraphone bags

Pretty funny in some ways. For years now I have been carting around the NStar in an Altieri, which is a lightweight bag, with no lid at all and a drawstring close that leaves considerable room for something to go down the open bell. No damage due to the bag. It has been played in a community ...

Is that the 494 that is now mine, that I bought because of your recommendation (with thanks!)?

Re: Miraphone bags

Soon I will be able to post a picture of me with the Hagen so you all can laugh at the size contrast. Ergonomically it works well for me though, with the box and the chair pad.

Re: Helene - everyone okay?

Sorry to hear all that -- my friend in central northern VA also had power and phone go out, and not even in the main path.
Here, we were 108 yesterday, with near zero humidity.

Re: 4/4 or 5/4 BBb Tuba

I find the 494 to be able to really put the sound out, and it's not going to require the same air -- plus -- it is a stellar tuba in all ways. Play one of those before you make a decision.

Re: tripod-base "display only" tuba stands

It has been commented on by the TE quartet that the cats don't appear to bother the tubas, which are always sitting out on their boxes. Nope, for some reason they respect my stuff. The furniture also does not get clawed -- they stick to their scratch mats and sisal stuff. Fully clawed, not trimmed ...

I think we need a tubabrella device that attaches to the bell rim and keeps the rain out, plus keeps your hair dry.
