Re: Holst - Suite 2 (beginning of March)

The vast majority of our wind instrument expression and articulation markings are derived from bowed string instruments’ markings, and - often - things are lost in the translation. It may "come from" strings' markings, but I can tell you brass players do NOT do what string players do with...

Re: Twoba?

Welll....I don't particularly need eye contact with the audience as either a performer or a listener. As a performer, I prefer to be as hidden as possible anyway. What I want is EAR contact, because, well, you know, it's not a picture, it's music.

Re: Wessex Eb horns

Most of ya'll know that I found my niche with my Eb NStar....but admit it was not as good below low C as my CC was. But otherwise just way easier to play. That tuba needed more air below C than the CC did.

It is a large piston CC tuba with a 17.5" bell. Like the Schiller piston CC "American" model.

Ah, that is not the 186 copy then (186 is a rotary.) Consider the 186 copy because you may be delighted with it.

Re: Shipping from Germany to USA

I don't get the continuing quarantine thing; never got some of it anyway. They said to clean all surfaces repeatedly but that purchased food was safe. Um? Some magic glow on food that viruses won't approach? Or since we haven't seen people dropping like flies from touching their groceries, the whole...

Re: We're playing...dammit.

When I was in Memphis, it was Albert Edelman who was the union rep, or so I remember, which may not be correct. That was a long time ago. Or maybe he was just the guy who found violin players.

Re: We're playing...dammit.

The Jackson (Tennessee) Symphony Orchestra... Ha. I played violin in JSO for a short while (3 mo?) back when I lived in Jackson for that same short while. 1970 or 1971. Played in Memphis after that for also a short while; my then father-in-law was the union rep. Right now, any playing is better tha...

Re: Bass trombone options

I have a YBL 321....it can sound like a really mellow tenor using a 9G and can really be bassy with a 1 1/2G. I'd be happy to let it go for around $500 BUT...the slide is not perfect, in the butter sense. For me, entirely usable. For someone slide-picky, they'd probably want to have it looked at. Wo...

Re: What can you tell me about the Chief mouthpiece?

Having recently been weighed at a stellar 88 pounds (not quite skeletal and no I am NOT anorexic)....my corners are never visible in a tuba mouthpiece that I sound decent on. I have no idea why, because my horn mouthpiece (Lawson) is not one of the wider ones, and my euph mpc is a kelly 5G. I think ...

Re: Needing Saxophone guidance

A community band I played in had a bass sax player for a couple years.....lady about my size even. She had a very nice sound and played the tuba parts in tune on a Beuscher (which I probably spelled wrong.) I got interested in getting either one of those or a paperclip contra-alto, found the contra ...

2+3 5th valve on an F tuba?

Has this ever been done? My old Miraphone 184 was the vintage that was 2+3 for the 5th valve, and I far prefer that to the more modern way of doing the 5th valve. I liked being able to use that 5th valve for Ab scale notes on the 184, and wonder if I would like an F tuba better if it had the same se...

Re: Silver plating

Thank you for your comment! The same will apply with laqcer and satin laqcuer? Lacquer isn't a "plating" as far as I know, it's just a spray and I don't think it would affect resonance even spraying it on heavily. (Think the old King Eastlake Orange that can't be penetrated by 88mm shells...

Re: What can you tell me about the Chief mouthpiece?

When I was play testing the Wessex 3/4 BBb, they sent a Chief with it. I liked the mouthpiece and am surprised that it is considered huge, because I have trouble with something like a Jim Self, whose throat is too big and which is too funnel shaped. Maybe the chief is a bit cup shaped? This was year...

Re: Alphorn players out there?

I've played one a few times and found the air supply not that different from a regular horn, and the intonation on the ones I played acceptable. I preferred a horn mouthpiece, but I'm a horn player. But I'm also one of these people who is pretty much equally (in)competent on all brass, with the exce...

Re: Violin tuning

And.....I don't know if it is a full size, but if it is.....string length from the nut to the bridge is just a hair under 13 inches. I don't see how it could have shipped with the bridge not intact and have an in-place sound post, likely ending up with a collapsed belly and for sure a complete lack ...
