Question, not a tuba. Drums!

Post by Grumpikins »

My son is a drummer and we recently picked up a set of slingerland marching drums from the 50s based on the badges. We successfully restored the snare and it's really cool. Vintage sound. A 28 inch bass in progress and a strange 16inch tom.

I cant find any info about the tom so I'm asking the older folks here for some. I tried getting on a drum forum but the admin seems to be non existent as my profile has been waiting several weeks for approval and the email link is dead, soo....

The Tom has a domed steel pan on the bottom instead of a head. I looks to be original as there are no holes in the drum for lugs to mount a head on the bottom. on the inside I can tell that the bottom edge has the same reinforcement with beveled edge for a head so the drum hasn't been cut down either. It looks like it's meant to be carried with a sling like the snare also.

Here's a link to pictures. If it works.

Thanks for any knowledge you can bestow upon us.

I march with someone who uses a similar snare. He recently drew my attention to it. It really carries!

I'm sorry, what was the question, again? Oh right. General info... I'll ask next time i march with him.

I'm really looking for info about the, what I think is, Tom. I've never seen one, or pictures with the steel pan bottom. I've been searching the internet and come up with nothing. Really hoping somebody somewhere has an old slingerland catalogue with marching drums in it.

A friend saw this post, and sent this to me:

I don't know where you are located, but you might try contacting Jack DiIanni at Volkwein's in Pittsburgh, PA. He runs the place and is quite the expert on percussion. He may know something about that drum.

I'm really curious to hear what it sounds like. Will get to that drum later this summer.

HumBell has it: it's called a tenor drum.
