New Acquisition!

Post by DandyZ629 »

My 1923 Conn CC has some competition. This is my, as of yesterday, Conn 3J CC. Why haven't I acquired one of these before! Definitely a better horn than I deserve.

Those 3J's are special. It's the only one of Richard Murrow's tubas I've heard him say he would never sell, and he's a miraphone guy.

Congrats!

Two beautiful horns that deserve to be in each others company. I have a fairly unesthetic 2J that is quite a player. Congratulations on your new 3J, enjoy!

Congratulations--was looking for a 3J in good condition a couple years ago. Gave up.

I recall (just after Olds was shuttered in 1979, and Conn could - then - no longer subcontract the 2J/4J tubas from F. E. Olds - in Fullerton, Cal.) seeing a couple of the very first of those 3J/5J tubas on display at a Kansas/Colorado music educators conference in Colorado (KMEA/CMEA...??) in 1979 at a booth manned by a C.G. Conn rep., along with Marty Erickson. I don't know if Mr. Erickson was paid to be at the booth, or just there chatting...(??) He was there to play a solo with one of the bands that was performing. (I was there playing a recital with the KU brass quintet. The trombone-guy had arranged that, as he was a very aggressive recruiter.)

Those instruments are very useful and remarkably well-braced. Someone who's played nothing but a 6/4 C and some F tuba for a few years, though, probably will need fifteen minutes to an hour of acclimation.

Congratulations ! :smilie8: :smilie7:

The Conn 2J/3J can be great horns. The 5Js can be really nice BBb tubas also.

Reminds me of that gem that Big Bob had for sale years ago. Wonder whatever happened to that guy?

I have wondered that as well. I believe he is or was in the Midwest?

Beautiful horns! I have only played a 3J once, and it was just a few minutes, but I liked it! Yours looks like a beauty!
