YEB-381 valve guide replacement

Post by BlueRidgeTeacher »

I found a sweet deal on a Yamaha 381 e flat for my son and would like to replace the valve guides myself. They are currently noisy. I’ve seen discussions about replacing them with nylon guides but can’t seem to find the part. I anyone could direct me to the part or give me a reason not to do it myself, I’d much appreciate it.

Thanks

Getzen or Allied Supply might have some nylon ones that can sort of be adapted to fit that application which fit the valves on one of the the early version of Yamaha (as you are showing us).

Those early era Yamaha metal guides that are top mounted are quite similar to Holton 345 guides, and I've been able to use the Willson top mounted style nylon guides on the Holton 345'valves, as long as I use the original Holton screws...so I'm thinking the same for Yamaha.

Understand that there are both top mounted and side-mounted nylon guides for various eras of Willson.

You may have to ask for help from your local repair shop or knowledgeable repair person in the back of your local music store. I just did a quick courtesy check for you on the internet and I don't see anyone selling them retail..

Check eBay. I found 4 in a lot of miscellaneous valve guides. I'm not sure if there are 2 sizes since the ones I have look small.
Don't lose the screws I believe when I asked my repair guy they're specific to the valve guides and not used on anything in the current line up.
