Tuba Tuesday: Busch Eb tuba

Post by bisontuba »

Happy Tuba Tuesday

This Tuba Tuesday the Museum is featuring the only instrument in the collection by the New York maker Frederick Busch: a F. Busch, three piston valve, Eb tuba, circa 1893, shown below.

Frederick W. Busch was born in Germany in 1843. His family emigrated to The U.S. circa 1850. In 1869, Busch had begun manufacturing brass instruments in New York City. He continued to make mostly high brass instruments until his death in 1920.

This F. Busch Eb tuba -
which is 31 inches high and has a 12 inch bell diameter - has the words “Imported by F. Busch New York” engraved on the bell. The design of this instrument is reminiscent of early English Besson tubas, which leads the Museum to believe that Busch might have had this Eb tuba made for him by Besson.

Thanks for the additional comments...

Before finishing reading, I was attempting to congrue "German-tuba-makin'-guy" and "Besson-lookin'-tuba". :smilie8:

I really hope there's a Busch BBb tuba out there somewhere, that way we can call this one the Busch Lite.
