I have a very nice King Duo Gravis bass trombone that I need to sell. I bought this in November, and never used it -- literally unboxed and stuck it in the garage. It's in great original condition, just one tiny dent on the slide handle/crossbar. Slide works well, bell is undamaged, everything works just fine.

Features dual dependent F/E valves. .563 bore and 9 1/2 gold brass bell. Valves are string linkages, which may stand to be tightened up.

These trombones are widely known and sought after for jazz work, because of their "commercial" sound. Lots of bite lots of punch. These are also popular as doubling horns for tuba players -- that was my plan, but... my plans changed!

No, just go buy what you want, or get a used Getzen or Holton or Conn. Converting this to independent would destroy a great example of a horn they don't make any more and cost you more than buying a new horn. Like converting a 65 mustang to a pickup truck.

Tony Clements was recently selling one of these that he had converted to independent Bb/F/Gb/D. I'm not sure what the conversion cost him, but he listed that horn at $3,000.

I should mention that D slides can occasionally be found for these, to at least put it in Bb/F/D dependent setup. I had intended to buy one long ago, and had found one... then never got around to buying it. I bet someone could make one though.

Bloke, Benn Hansson could do that, along with others. The pressing point on the horn would be the trigger setup. Leave the leadpipe receiver alone. While I do prefer the Bach 50 sound, this horn is absolutely beautiful.

These are unique as well. The shepherd's crook, the valve tubing the same as the slide bore, the reverse bell lock, the single radius crooks, the double thumb valve levers (OK, most people change that and the E tuning. )

Plus, these can be had in Silver Sonic (Sterling bell). Duo Gravis are unique, and rare enough to find in good shape. This looks like a closet queen.

These are still sought after for that bright commercial sound, so you'd probably want to darken it up and put a bigger bell and slide to go full bull-moose on it. Don't forget to lower it a couple inches, and fuzzy dice!

SIDEBAR BLATHER (BUMP !!!)

A friend of mine has a SOLID SILVER BELL King Duo Gravis - and with the METAL (not plastic) linkage...H.N. White - no less...and PERFECT condition.
WERE he to will it to me and croak, I WOULD rededicate myself (as I attempted to - two or three times in the past) to mastering the instrument.

Lately, he's been more interested in playing his JP comp E-flat tuba, and (when hired to play bass trombone) a VERY old Holton "Fuchs" model - which I customized for him - to allow for a low B-natural.

Personally, I think this one is a heck of a looker, too, and should be a LOT of fun for someone. It's obviously been used sparingly over the years... But it deserves to be used.

The one at Dillon's is just silver plate. If it was sterling, it would say "Silver Sonic" on the bell. Incidentally, as far as those being "commercial" instruments...the whole trombone section of the National Symphony switched to sterling silver bell Kings once Mstislav Rostropovich took over as Music Director. They did it because it was easier to give him the sound he wanted. To paraphrase in Slava's words..."You all play trombone like cello. I always want my cello to sound like trombone. Trombone must roar like lion!" There's a live "Alexander Nevsky" out there from 1982 that perfectly illustrates what he meant. Here's the link. Sorry to hijack, but it's kinda topical
