We had late-night TV in the '70s in NW FL, although it was reruns of Gunsmoke, Bonanza, The Big Valley, and Green Acres, as I recall. It's odd to look at old photographs of the time, since now the faded colors are what I see in my memories. They still had a party line in our neighborhood in upstate NY for the first year, where I moved after graduating high school in FL.

That was my high chair, and when we visited, my mother always pulled it out so my son (the little guy) could sit in it. The bearded man in the trooper hat holding him is my oldest brother. I was sporting the stache. I think we had been outside cooking all day in one of our rare cold Texas days.

Folks my grandparents' age made time to watch Lawrence Welk on TV come Saturday night.

Most MLB, NBA, and NHL games weren't televised, and you had to watch the games on the radio.

The 1970s was a great time for television, especially the local ones.

Speaking of, my FAVORITE show was the original (low budget before he briefly went national) “Uncle Floyd Show” on WBTB channel 68 UHF. One of the high points of my youth was running into him (Floyd Vivino, who happens to be a fine stride piano player too) at a flea market and getting his autograph.

My 2015 Toyota Prius has 154,000 miles on it. I drive a lot. Original brake pads are still only 1/2 worn and the two batteries (hybrid, and little one for powerful gas engine) are original. Also, spark plugs and valves are like new. I get approx. 60,000 miles on a set of tires. 49 mpg. The Prius is an astonishing automobile.

Three more early TV reminders of age:

4. Hydroplane racing. Crashes were a regular event, with a considerable number of fatalities. I think the fatalities caused the end of the broadcasts.

5. Miniature golf tournaments for money.

I’ve always got someone showing up or calling regarding some somewhat-serious business proposition right when I’m leaving for a gig…
…so I end up driving like a bat out of hell to get to whatever-gig at least 15 to 20 minutes (10 ? ) before it starts.
I wonder whether an optimally 65 mpg hybrid Toyota or my optimally 44 mpg non-hybrid Toyota would perform better at the speeds that I drive… and never mind how fast they are.
Another factor is that I just don’t think I would ever buy a USED hybrid, and my USED 85K mi Corolla was about $5000 bucks versus a new Prius for about $26000 or $27,000 bucks… and I guess if I bought a brand new car like that, I’d feel obligated to put collision insurance on it, whether or not I paid cash for it…
… and I’m still finding gasoline for sub-three dollar prices, here, but mostly buy real (no alcohol) gasoline for about $3.25 a gallon.

I bought my 2014 Prius C new in Mid-2015 (got a deal)... it has about 178,000 miles. Back then I commuted an hour, but with a decent amount 45 mph or less speeds. Isially would get 50-60 MPG. Now my commute is about an hour, but a lot of 75 mph expressway... that combined with COLD weather... these days I'm getting about 40 MPH. And original batteries and brakes. Just had to replace windshields and tires. I replaced spark plugs because the book says to.

More topic relevant, I’m guessing that you are old enough that your tuba isn’t quite twice your age. Am I correct?

In the past, I’ve owned tubas that are older than me, but currently my oldest tuba (a relic) is two years younger than me.
That having been said, if I finish my Buescher recording bass in C project, that one dates to 1928, unless all of the eventual rearranging and shortening moves its “built-in” date up to 2028…??
(.726” bore, 19” bell, 5/4 size, 4 like-new top action pistons + 5th rotor.) due to its original build date, I’m going to designate it as my “for playing American in Paris“ instrument.
