Re: Miraphone 187
Art (and the show) were unique. He didn't screen calls. Just took whatever came in. Quite interesting at times. I always liked his style of letting folks tell their story and letting the audience make up their own minds. Always had interesting guests.bort2.0 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 17, 2021 2:27 pm I listen to red eye radio a lot more than I listen to coast to coast... But I did catch a lot of art bell reruns on the radio. Re: Miraphone 187
Not particularly. Nothing really against him, just never found him too interesting. The Red Eye guys are sort of that classic talk radio kind of annoying, too (those laughs!), but somehow, more interesting and tolerable. I actually like it the most when Dan Mandis fills in for them.
Actually, most of the time, I listen to podcasts of Denver talk radio shows. About 15 years ago, I nearly moved to Denver (before it became the cool thing to do... I simply liked the mountains...), but my now-wife and I had just met and she was set on moving to NYC. So, that's how that went (and without regrets). Anyway, I started listening to Denver talk stations while I was traveling out there for work, interviewing for jobs, and finding an apartment... All of which I did, but didn't seal the deal. But I still listen to their local talk radio, because it's what I've gotten used to, and it's still the same people on the air after all these years. I remember Dan Mandis from his time as program director on a Denver station. I think he's on in Nashville, now?
I listen to too much talk radio... I'm often up until 3am, so having something live to listen to is nice. I should probably just sleep more...

Re: Miraphone 187
It's got some big bow dents and has had some major bell repairs in the past. But not bad price if you are looking for one and don't care much about condition.

The bottom bow can also be repaired in house quite competently, I’d reckon, if one is willing to pay for the shop time.

Re: Miraphone 187
That should have been done before taking photos and advertising it for sale. It's a $6k horn with no dents easily. Not the first time they've mislabeled a horn or a description was wonky. As much as Matt knows, you would think that petty stuff would be taken care of before a horn was ready to be published (even if it's not HIM writing the ad).

Re: Miraphone 187
The horn plays fine with the dent, and Matt know it's a wash to make it pretty and pay for it or sell as is... And as is is faster.

Re: Miraphone 187
I bet it still sits awhile. That dent would take a professional like Matt no time at all to at least smooth out (maybe not make perfect but just around the guard)?

Re: Miraphone 187
It’s this.
I’m sure Dillon has plenty of backlog in the repair shop. Why spend time fixing it when someone might buy it as-is?

Re: Miraphone 187
The price is set *because* of the scarring. If it were to be fixed all of that would be labor-intensive and very costly, raising the price up to the point where many potential buyers will pass. It needs to be sold *as is* and then the buyer can fork over the time and funds to fix each issue, one at a time - if - they even bug him or her enough to go through all that mess.
I would fix the bow dents in my own shop and leave the bell alone. There are no wrinkles. The scars are to the finish and not the metal. Even if fixed PERFECTLY the lacquer would look like that. In fact, the more perfectly it is fixed (read: the more the metal is worked) the more lacquer will end up flaking off.

Re: Miraphone 187
I guess you would just have to work in a retail business or the like to understand. I know it's just a dent, and maybe you're all right. But..it's a slippery slope until you become another GR Winds or another reseller/flipper with completely flattened horns up on a special "scratch n' dent bargain" tab on your website. I think their reputation is better than this and should have more fit and finish to their "front line" instruments. This isn't just another King 1240 or Conn 10J they're selling. Just the opinion of someone who works in an industry where fit and finish matters when presenting something for sale to the public.matt g wrote: ↑Thu Feb 03, 2022 3:52 amWhat’s not being disclosed here?KingTuba1241X wrote: ↑Thu Feb 03, 2022 12:47 amBecause they are a reputable shop and can do better than this.

Re: Miraphone 187
Dillon's offering a horn with cosmetic issues for $5K that lists for almost $10K new. If I were in the market for a 187, this would seem to me like a good deal.
As always, your mileage may vary.

Re: Miraphone 187
IMO apples and oranges possibly right? NEW 186's are also MSRP at $10k but ones (still in great condition with no dents but older from the 80's-90's with larger bell) are still selling for MUCH less than retail ($3k-5k). The price is great on the Dillon horn dents or no dents, don't get me wrong..it's just the advertising aspect that's a head scratcher for such an easy fix that could bump that price $1k.

Re: Miraphone 187
I've been shopping there for about 20 years, other people for .much longer... The message has always been clear (and kind!) to move inventory off the floor.
I've been told both "there's no money in new tubas" and "there's no money in used tubas." But more than that, there's no money in tubas that sit on the floor. It'll move quickly at that price to someone who doesn't care about the dent. Matt can do the work, of course, but how long would it even take to get to it? Cut the price and sell as-is.
They had a Conn 20J there for a while that had lots of dents. it was similarly advertised as not being de-dented, because the work would be more expensive than it's worth.
