Re: Guessing game: What is bort's next tuba?
“fits in my truck”
OK…A HINT !!!
…so it’s got to have at least three valves, right?
and it must be some sort of a tuba-like instrument…

Re: Guessing game: What is bort's next tuba?
Hey now, I worked hard to get that reputation!
BTW -- for real -- the line is already 2 or 3 deep for interest if I'm going to sell. You all know me too well.
I really do want to keep it for a while and have my fun with it. I've always wanted one of these BIG rotary tubas. When I do finally stop this stuff, pretty sure it will be with a Miraphone 188. I'm in no hurry to get there, but I do have my eyes locked on that down the line.
Re: Guessing game: What is bort's next tuba?
Hurray!
What did I win, what did I win?
Good luck with the Rudi, I think it will be a 'keeper'.
I had a Rudi 4/4BBb for a while, and liked it a lot.
I have once tried a Rudi BBb that was badged 'Reisser Ulm' as well, don't know how many were made, maybe it's the same horn... nice big tuba.

Aw, shucks. 'Tweren't nothing. Thanks!
And glad the bag no longer contains a cat, so i need be less cautious about revealing privileged info.
Side note... I believe that Reisser is still in business today in Ulm, Germany. The city of New Ulm, MN is like 90 mins from here. I should take my tuba there some day for a very obscure visit.
And i hear ya about takin' a tuba back to where it came from.
The last tuba xmas i made was about as close to Shamokin as i am likely to play, and while no one could read it outside at night, the tuba i brought had SHAMOKIN BAND engraved around the rim of the bell...
(and a few years running it has been my little joke to play a boston tuba at that particular xmas)

Very cool! What a big beauty! Not mine though... The one you showed has newer valve linkages. Mine has S-links and clockwork springs.
Hope it was a great playing tuba!

Re: Bort's Rudy Meinl 5/4 BBb (not ready yet)
My tuba isn't ready yet (that's fine), just wanted to share this link of a tuba on German eBay:
https://m.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzei ... 43-74-6273
Looks to be *almost* the same as mine, except the one above seems to have started as a 3 valve tuba, and had a 4th valve added. Mine has always been 4 valves. Hard to tell scale from photos without context... but it's a biggie.

Re: Bort's Rudy Meinl 5/4 BBb (not ready yet)
Am I missing an inside joke (not feeling so humorous today)?
The seller claims it’s a Rudy even though it’s stamped Music House Reisser in Ulm.
Is it some well known fact that Reisser sells/sold Rudy’s with their badge on it or are we just assuming the seller is telling the truth?
The seller seems to sell a lot of instruments under one name which just happen to be stamped as something else.
Maybe it’s his specialty.

Re: Bort's Rudy Meinl 5/4 BBb (not ready yet)
The one in the eBay ad is similar to mine, but I can't speak with certainty about that tuba.
But mine is also badged as Reisser in Ulm. As I understand it, the engraving Rudolf Meinl started to appear on the bells in 1969. Before that, a few other variants.
Christian Reisser is a music store in Ulm. Back in the 50s/60s, a few different makers like Rudy Meinl, Cerveny, and some made in Markneukirchen were sold by the store, and stencilled with the Reisser badge instead of the mark of the maker.
Mine is confirmed by Lee Stofer and Rudy Meinl Jr. To be one of those tubas made by Rudolf Meinl. Actually, I think it was made by current Rudy's grandfather... And I think I heard that current Rudy is actually Rudy III and not Jr.? I don't know, but that's what I sort of recall.
Uwe Schneider You still have a page on his website about Reisser... It was short and didn't include too many details, but it did cover a few things. It seems to be missing since you updated his website a few weeks ago. I emailed him about it, but didn't hear anything back.
I had never heard of Reisser before October.

About an hour ago, I was notified that my tuba is ready.
I have seen a few photos from Lee.

Re: Bort's Rudy Meinl 5/4 BBb (completed!)
A few photos... (the dark spots are reflections, not lacquer wear). Lee has done an outstanding job of repairing and preparing this ~65 year old tuba for it's future life. I can't actually believe that I get to bring this tuba home.
Tuba is still in Iowa, so I haven't seen or played it yet. From what Lee tells me... I'm gonna be pretty dang happy with it. :)
