I finally sat down and played through this last night - after all these years of never bothering.
It’s sort of fun to play, so I played through it several times - working on tightening up the rhythmic accuracy and phrasing.
The contrabassoon begins the movement playing some of the same stuff, and – after the horns make a over-the-top loud statement, and the trombones play a couple of measures of ascending chords - the tuba restates it, and (as seen) really goes to town. I have to believe that it was originally played on French tuba.
I listened to a recording of it (a San Diego recording) and I could’ve sworn there was a cut in it.

A playing of the craziest parts written for that little thing would be a hell of a masterclass/recital.
I think the most telling thing about this if it were asked at an audition would be the tempo/style. If only this page were put in front of someone, I could see it being played "correctly" but VERY wrong.
As someone who is 30+ and worked on "the list" ten years or so ago and forgot everything in the interceding years, I give - what is the excerpt? PM me if it's still a super-duper secret.
