Facebook/Instagram major outage...

(' sounds like a hack to me, but they never admit having been hacked, do they?)

They seem to be back up.

Based on the amount of time for the outage it seems more likely it was a rollout of some sort that was rolled back. Enterprise technology is quite complex at this level. Chances are they will not release the reason for the outage due to security concerns. Meta will not anyone outside of the company to know why it went down unless they are forced to. The people who work on it are precluded from publishing any issues or fixes and the software/hardware vendors themselves will be involved.

A good website to check when a major website is down is https://downdetector.com/ . You can post having issues getting to those sites.

...not everyone lost access, but ("news" sources claim "thousands") which could well mean "thousands of thousands" if not "hundreds of thousands of thousands".
