I've only played a g/cb-50 a couple of times, and they resonated nicely. Yamaha sticks fifth valves in mouthpipes on F tubas, and a whole bunch of people buy those. I never have heard complaints or suspicions that those fifth valves messed anything up.
The original Holton and York instruments in this size are virtually identical - as far as their bells and bows are concerned. Having souped one up and kept it in B-flat, it sure is easy to play in tune, and quite facile. I can't think of a reason to shorten it by two feet, but again, you are reading something typed by a very recently-reformed/nearly-half-century C player, which is probably just about as bad as a recently reformed smoker.

@bort2.0 Martin built rotary Ebs on special order. Just order up a rotary valve set of the correct (small enough) bore size and have yours rebuilt as a rotary.

OK Bort,
If you Really, really, REALLY want a rotary Stofer CC, I can build it for you, but it will not be cheap. I will need at least a
$5K deposit to get the MAW rotors custom-made for it and assemble the valveset. Hint: A Josef Lidl 883 CC with a .795" bore
and characteristics very much like my piston tuba would cost about $5K less - just sayin' . . .
