In my experience in other people's homes with indoor dogs, they put up with this model of tuba up to about a threshold of D above the staff

Is the fifth valve loop a little short? Or is it wider and I’m just not used to that look?

Looks like the factory short length to me. I know a lot of owners had to lengthen it to reach the traditional flat whole step length. This looks like a regular whole step or even a 3/4 step length.
