New Arrival

Post by Stryk »

I pulled the trigger on a pig in the poke, an Alexander 163 in C. I am a happy camper. It left Houston at 5pm Wednesday and arrived at my house in Florida at 1:30pm on Friday. R&L Carriers are remarkable! I do have to say kudos to Victor Gomez who answered every question I had honestly, supplying great picture, and had this horn packed and picked up withing 24 hours of receiving payment for it. Mechanically it is in good condition, it seems to be relatively in tune with itself using a shallower mouthpiece, and the sound is absolutely awesome. These sometimes get a bad rap because of the intonation, but I believe part of that rap is the fault of the owner. I only played it an hour yesterday, so I will know more as I get used to the horn but contrary to what many contend, a mouthpiece DOES affect intonation on some horns. If you use something like a Parke Offenloch on this horn, it will be horribly out of tune. If you use something akin to a C4, there will be very little slide pulling and very few adult fingerings. This is my experience on a 186 and now this 163 - your mileage may vary.

How long do you think it will stay shiny like that? are you going to spray over that with a clear coat?

Just wax - it may last a year or so.

Thanks, Mark. I think it will be a good horn for me. Not the most in tune horn, but my 186 was atrocious until I learn it's secrets! On with the adventure!
