Post by prairieboy1 »

The Saskatoon Concert Band will be performing on Saturday, February 17th at 7:30 pm at the Broadway Theatre here in Saskatoon. Our program is titled, "Romance Renewed!" and is filled with great music. Here's the program:
O Canada-Lavallee, arranged by Cable
Selections from "Candide Suite"-Bernstein, arranged by Grundman
"Romeo and Juliet Overture"-Tschaikovsky, arranged by Mancini
Selections from "West Side Story"-Sondheim and Bernstein
Selections from "Porgy and Bess" -Gershwin and Heyward and Gershwin
"Beach Boys Forever"-arranged by Brubaker
"Music Of The Beatles"-arranged by Sweeney
"Sinatra In Concert"-arranged by Nowak
Our Community Band is really looking forward to this performance and our section is very happy about the quality of the tuba parts for this concert. Plenty of fun stuff to play!

Nice concept and repertoire! I've played many of these tunes over the years and you're right, tubas have some good licks! Good luck and enjoy! :tuba:

I’d consider making the (long) three-day drive if you would take me to Baba’s for perogies before the concert. It’s been nineteen years since I was last there and I’ve almost finished digesting the last batch. :teeth:

Sounds like a fun concert. Will any of the musicians be using genuine Saskatchewan sealskin bindings on their instruments?

LOL  I am sorry to disappoint you, however the sealskins needed would have to be procured from MUCH farther north than where our band lives and performs. As well, while the skins are very water resistant (to avoid red rot, etc.) they are also extremely slippery and thus not suited for being held for long periods of time. The Richardson's ground squirrel is a much better alternative for bindings and the Saskatchewan government will provide a bounty for each squirrel skin used.

 Hilarious that you would post this today as I actually had perogies, kolbassa and cabbage rolls for lunch today prior to a two and a half hour rehearsal at our band hall. It was the best playing I've done in months. Hmm. Perhaps a correlation here?

Lol! The King 2341 receives the marching orders for this one. At some point, I would like to try the Holton. However, it has just returned after a visit with Lee Stofer where he meticulously rebuilt the destroyed lead pipe on it that I posted about three years ago. I am still renewing acquaintances with it and it should be ready in about a month or so. The King Recording Bass is my polka and summer band concert horn. The Yamaha was a Facebook Marketplace rescue that I just couldn't stand looking at any more. It was a school instrument that had a baseball bat taken to it, however the valves are pristine and the slides(albeit after a bit of work) are also good. I do not play it very much, however I am glad I took care of it. This is probably much more than you wanted to know. My apologies! :tuba:

I am sorry I couldn't resist a running joke from Super Dave. I loved that show.
