Re: Sellmansberger Tuba Mouthpieces
@bloke There used to be a comprehensive list of offerings that I used to frequently refer back to. Could you possibly post something like that again sometime?

Re: Thomann Tubas?
The top one is a copy of a Kalison F tuba. The bottom one I can't find on the Thomann site. The bottom one (as bort2.0 said) looks a lot like a Meinl-Weston made for the Mnozil brass. There are some brief shots of it in this video. He didn't seem to play it for very long compared to the other ...

Re: player's big lips / wide rim (why?)
bloke As usual, I'm sure I'll be very interested in what you have come up with, though I am very much opposed to the fixed rim. To me, your 33.2 #2 rim feels like doing the trapeze without a net above the staff, but the 32.9 mm #2 feels just like home. I don't think my face is quite big enough for ...

Re: Yamaha springs in Besson 983?
bort2.0 I use the Yamaha euph springs in my smaller RM (18mm bore). They are fantastic on that tuba. I think I formerly used the Yamaha tuba springs in a big valve MW (19mm bore). I expect the Besson valves to be smaller in diameter than the MW big vales, but taller than either my RM valves or the ...

This is definitely the coolest instrument thread I've seen in quite some time.
I can't tell you how many times I've seen that album cover and wondered where that instrument got to.

Re: 5th dependent valve (#4 slide assembly w/rotor and trigger) for YEP-321
If one were to go through the trouble of making one of these, wouldn't it be 'better' to make a replacement main tuning slide with a valve in it (assuming clearance, enough dollars, and desire) ?

Re: List of B&S 101 Stencil Names (so far)
I have seen "not B&S made" instruments with a lot of the brands in the list above engraved on them, so I would find the list to be of questionable utility.

Re: New alexander 163/164 tubas
I think with most folks who have Alexanders these days felt they had to have Alexanders and nothing else would do.
It seems to me the prototypical 5/4 CC instruments are the B&S PT6 (3098), B&S PT6P (3198), and the Meinl-Weston 5450 Thor.

Re: New alexander 163/164 tubas
Thank you all! I was thinking about future larger horns for myself (i play a gnagey 4/4 cc now) and was curious about some german horns like the Rudy 5/4 and Alexanders. Would you all say an Alexander 163 if fine for an orchestra when comparing to other popular 5/4 tubas? Thanks I have a (I think ...

Re: New alexander 163/164 tubas
I played a new Alex 163 CC at Hornguys several years ago. I thought it was a very fine instrument. It was pretty well in tune with itself. Had a I needed a tuba that day, that would have been it. I can't say that I ever recall playing an old 163.

Re: Holton 105 or 350?
The Boston Symphony has a Nirschl York model with a Kanstul-made bell on it, so it would appear Kanstul did make bells to retrofit some horns.

Maybe you need Dave to thread one of those cups so you can use your normal rim.

Re: the old 184 - O-99 thing...with a different twist...
Personally, I'd be much more interested in something more the opposite. I'd rather see an 18mm piston valve set replace the rotors on a 184 CC bugle.

With the long leadpipe, wouldn't one end up with a pretty flat bugle?

Re: Jim Self mouthpiece shank question
You can measure it. The end of the shank on an "American" shank tuba mouthpiece should be about .520". What you could do if you need it to fit that particular tuba is file off a bit of the shank end. you'd be slightly shortening the mouthpiece from the shank end which would result in the end of the ...

Re: MAW valves to fit King - anecdotal (and extremely limited-in-scope) report
Are the Eastman EBB-534 valves similar enough to the King valves they copy to permit use of the MAW valves with fitting? Rick “just as a matter of curiosity” Denney I read on this very forum that Martin Wilk has MAW valves for the Eastman 632 and 836. The 632 is a 534 shortened to CC. https://www.tu ...

Re: Tracking Devices
If you put the air tag inside some metal thing, I would think that could possibly reduce its signal range. I don't think you want to do that. What I would do is make one of those naugahyde or leather protectors with a pocket only accessible from the inside of it. I'm thinking of one of those things ...
