Re: Jay Friedman retiring from CSO

As an amateur sometimes tuba player, I would have thought the Chicago Symphony to be one of those gigs that's the pinnacle of success, yet the last two principal trumpet players have left. What's up with that?

are Stofer Geibs still available?

Are Stofer Geibs still available new?

Approximately what price range do they sell for used?
Assume light use, unmarked rim, insertion marks in the shank.

Re: Sellmansberg II - II

@bloke I assume this has the #2 rim? If so, at what inner diameter? Silver plated brass? does that make it the Sellmansberg 4? 4-tay :smilie2: I'll post some more junk later. Tomorrow at lunch time, I have to head out of town to play some really wild stuff. I need to look at it some more tonight ...

Re: Rare Tuba Mouthpieces

I have two mouthpieces stamped Fred Geib 318 This is per my memory as they're not next to me at the moment. I've never seen a third or heard anyone talk about having one either. They are nicer to play and prettier sounding than the Conn Geib, so I was willing to sell the Conn to Bort. 😁 I had a set o ...

… ============================ 196 "Fasolt" - claims to (simply) be a larger bell pancake version of 195, but mouthpipe shape is not the same as 195. ============================ …. I thought the Fasolt was Fafner body + big side of bottom bow scaled up + a 2165 bell. I’m no expert.

The fifth rotor on the 497 looks to be aftermarket.
IIRC, that was actually the factory MW “solution” for a rotor Fafner 5th valve, at least at one time. Iirc, they’d sell you one separately, too.

The leather guard with a pocket on the inside seems like a bit more workable idea.

Though I really do like the idea of it being inside the tuba.

I like the idea of having the airtag inside the tuba.
Would adhesive velcro strips not be just as effective as superglue and less caustic? It'd be easier to remove for battery replacement also.

Our letter jackets were the same as the athletic jackets. Mine had some patches on it. No idea where it went, but it's gone. I doubt I ever had a picture taken with it while on my person. I don't think I have any of my high school yearbooks, either.

Re: Holton 345 Valves VS Mienl Weston Valves

I’m replacing the entire valve section on my holton. On the holton the 4th valve bore is 0.830” but the port exiting the valve is 0.750, which I believe leads to some response issues. Neither are for sale for the time being. .... Is the 4th valve on the MW set not larger than the other three? would ...

Re: mouthpiece rim material

I had two. one clear and one black. both #2 33.2 mm. I now have just the black one. The clear Lexan was kinda ugly and less smooth than the black. I could see the threads through it. I like having a Lexan rim. It's lighter. It's nicer to play when it is cold. I do wish I could have some #2 32.9 mm ...

Ok Considering that Miraphone is only an eight hour drive from where I live, I think I’ll try making an appointment with them. And I’ll let them vent the 5th valve as well.
