Re: (FIVE rotary) Meinl-Weston 195 and Miraphone 497
Why have 5 when you can have 6! This is what I previously owned, since sold and now play a Neo Bb in brass band. From the ad when I sold it: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1A-7npMJBSUlT2ew993pJqAyfg2h0tLsX?usp=sharing I emailed Bob Tucci, whom-helped design the Fafner and had Ed Diefes ...

Molded/Forged Carbon Valve buttons
Hi I have a mechanical engineer friend who specialises in molded carbon fiber. If I asked him, he could probably make carbon copies (pun intended) of my Yamaha Ybb 632 valve buttons, most likely with screw molded into the part. I play a lot of fast passages in Brass Band, so faster valves is always ...

Re: Geib mouthpiece on a Martin Eb?
I played a Stofer Geib on the little Wessex Eb, the Bombino, as a mouthpiece of choice. Mainly because its small throat (I think that was the influencing feature) gave the best intonation out of all the mouthpieces I owned at the time.

Re: Question about the future of Willson tubas
I played on an older 17" bell Imperial/New Standard with freshly rebuilt valves, done here in Australia. Converted to USD the price would have been approximately ~ $800 USD for the valve job. The valves were nickel plated and probably the best valves I have ever played - as good as my Yamaha Neo ...

Re: Question about the future of Willson tubas
I think Willson have a nice looking Compensating Bb tuba, that is rarely seen. Of interest to us Brass Band players might be a more readily available version of their Compensating Bb tuba, to give an alternative to the two main instruments in the market - the Besson 994 and the Yamaha Neo. Eastman ...

Re: Post-Surgery Advice Requested
Hi I commented on the old forum. I had mine done maybe 13 years ago. I would say there is no way you will be back to playing within 4 weeks. Maybe 6 weeks. Just focus on recommended rehab advice the Dr's give you. I had mine done maybe 13 years ago. I had a valve replaced, so perhaps my situation is ...

Re: Over capitalising and only appreciated by other Tubists
I must admit it did give me a bit of a thrill to have someone appreciate it! Afterwards I took another break, put the tuba down and from a distance thought to myself it is a fine looking tuba -sparkling gold brass and 6 valves. Musically though, I was more excited as the people who turned up to play ...

Over capitalising and only appreciated by other Tubists
So, I have a 6 valve one of a kind Norwegian Star. I’m nothing more than a good amateur player playing in a brass band. No one in my band notices it. But fundraising playing Christmas Carols in the local shopping centre there was a particularly excited person watching. She waited until we breaked a ...

Re: that annoying/crappy/sharp-as-hell 5-2-3-4 valve combination
What about a trigger/lever soldered to the #1 slide, but using bicycle cable (instead of fixed linkages) to transfer movement to whatever other slide needs to move? So you can pull/push the #1 slide as much as you like and then independently push the attached lever to action the third or whatever ...

Re: Yamaha sousaphone Valve section
Okay, I am no expert but I have gotten decent results with first cleaning from the leadpipe to the start of the tuning slide with a 3 step approach on my Yamaha: clean/degrease with dishwashing detergent and a snake brush, then soak the same section in vinegar (pour it down the leadpipe, really ...

Re: Sellmansberger Tuba Mouthpieces
Just played my first orchestra concert in maybe 5 years on a new to me 6/4 C tuba with 18” bell. Just an amateur orchestra that was down on numbers. Use the imperial mouthpiece with middle sized #2 rim. All mostly middle of the register stuff, nothing below low G and had to play a C# above the l ...

Re: bloke posts too often about tuning. 😒
I appreciate the emphasis! As an amateur I think there is a huge gap between intonation skills of the amateurs vs the pros and teachers don’t do a very good job of teaching intonation. They just expect students to some how figure it out themselves. But maybe that’s changed since I was a kid. Drones w ...

Re: Christian Niedermayer (Miraphone boss) absolutely rocks.
My repairman said, when converting my Norwegian Star to 6 valves, that Miraphone were great. The extra valve and lever assembly they supplied made it relatively easy for him to add.

Re: Freeing slides
I have poured boiled water on stuck slides and valves. Works well at freeing things. I’m not and never will be a repairman- it it has worked for me. I wouldn’t want to do it on a tuba with nice lacquer, but on old tuba’s it’s a goer.

Re: Chemical cleaning
The method I listed above is not as good as a professional clean, but it’s cheap and combined with me being a follower of the Bloke method of cheap valve (lamp) oil saturation seems to avoid me spending an hour or so each way to drop off the tuba to the nearest shop willing to clean a tuba and then h ...

Re: Chemical cleaning
So it sounds like not a DIY project… You can do a very low cost chemical clean at home. IMHO the ‘put the tuba in a bath’ cleaning method isn’t effective, but the method below is. I never fill the tuba completely with water. First get remove all slides, valves etc up to and including the main tuning ...

Re: POLL !! - XCVIII
Congratulations on the new tuba! I will probably never get to hear one live, so I can only imagine.
Couple of questions:
It’s light given its size - so made from sheet brass?
Why do you like the Fafner piston model but didn’t like the rotary version yet you like the 98 with rotors?
