Re: All Things Swamp

To be clear, that’s not “my” tune. I didn’t compose any of the songs on the album. Many of them are my arrangements, though. Inspired by my favorite NOLA groups: Nightcrawlers, Rebirth, Big Sam, the Meters, etc.

Glad you guys like it, though!

All Things Swamp

Howdy. This is a group that's been performing occasionally for the past few years. Back in August, the organ player reached out to me and asked if I'd like to do an album. He runs an organization called the Little Village Foundation which generally tries to help out underrepresented artists or those ...

Re: Yeah. Tubas!

His name is Shane Cox. He's the guy playing both trumpet and bone. This was his project. But it was short lived as he moved out to Minneapolis soon after we did the recording.

Here is a version of that tune we recorded a few years back.
Obviously, the video is not of the recording session.
Not the same arrangement.

Any sousaphones in Calgary?

I have a gig in Banff of Saturday 1/25. Flying in to Calgary on Friday and back out Sunday evening. I always try to not fly with my sousaphone and instead find a rental. If you've got a decently functioning BBb sousaphone in the Calgary/Banff area that you're willing to rent out, I'd happily pay you ...

Re: King fixed recording bell 1240 w/case

That is a cool horn. I have a soft spot for fixed recording bells.

Don't these older ones like this have the slightly larger bore than the standard 1240/2340 horns?

Agreed about the price. Not realistic.

Re: Protec sousaphone gig bag *shrug*?

I agree that fiberglass horns sound pretty good, to everyone else. But I have a much harder time hearing myself when I play my 22K vs playing my 38K. The bag is a good idea. It does offer some protection but it's main functions are to keep everything together and to ease transportation. The newer ...

Re: Finale is Dead - You Must Switch to Dorico

It’s hard to believe that they wouldn’t sell it. It seems that with that many dedicated users, including myself, there’s a pretty significant amount of money being left on the table by just ending it. I can’t imagine that whatever deal they’ve made with Dorico comes anywhere close to what they could ...

Re: NEW mobile bird bath news....

The ability to separate the bell flair from the elbow and then nest the elbow inside the flair is pretty cool. I'm sure the price won't be cool, though. The big issue that I have from using plastic/fiberglass bells is that I can't hear myself nearly as well as with a metal bell. I'd expect that to ...

Never mind

*****This has been taken care of**** Admins, feel free to delete. Hello, tuba family. I'm doing a very short brass band hit in Scottsdale, AZ during the day on Wednesday, April 10. Wondering if anyone has a BBb sousaphone that I could rent for a couple of hours. I'd rather put some money in the ...

Re: Wessex Helicon

I'm pretty sure Doc has the Eb version. I have the BBb. Until last year, it was my main horn since getting it in 2018. A very kind gentleman gifted me a Martin helicon from the 20s last year. As most of you'd probably guess, the Martin is a superior instrument in just about every way so the Wessex ...

Re: Tuba Chair

I modified a K&M keyboard stool (I think that's what it is) to make one of these. I used the built in slot for adding a back rest but had it come out the front instead. It lives at home in the tuba room. I think the only time I'd even consider taking it out is if I were doing some kind of long run ...

Re: ID Conn recording bass

Maybe it's time to take mine in for service, but it takes me a lot more breaths to play things on my 20j than on a 20k sousa or my 186. Maybe I need to reconsider my mouthpiece choice as well? Use it with a RT50, which is my all purpose go to. The bore of a 20J tuba is larger than the comparable ...

I had to do this to my Conn 38K from the 20s. There was just no way to play an F# that wasn't horribly flat. Chopped a little off the 3rd valve circuit and couldn't be happier.

I like your sandpaper/spit-valve contraption on your tuning slide. That's a clever solution I haven't seen before.
