Interesting. Does the proportion of conical vs. cylindrical tubing influence slot width in a predictible manner? Thanks.

Hi Mary Ann,

Could you please explain a bit further? This terminology is new to me.

Thanks!

Thanks. I check out the Thomann horns from time to time - they have a pretty nice F bundle with a bag, etc.

Please keep us posted with your safari results. I'm alphorn-curious and would like to learn how this turns out. Good luck!

I wonder if that could be corrected with a mouthpiece safari. Tough call.

Re: This post is referring to alphorns, but also brass intonation in general.

How do the flat harmonics within your alphorn series match up (relatively-speaking) with those of the natural trumpet or other natural horns? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_trumpet https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_trumpet#/media/File:Harmseries_1.svg E.g., I can lip up the 7th harmonic ...

Wallace sousaphone/F practice mute & soft horns

Has anyone tried one of these: https://www.bestmutes.com/product/muirhead-wallace-m27c-tuba-sousaphone-mute/?v=d60f753e9835 in a sousaphone? In a fiberglass sousaphone? I can’t seem to find a picture of one installed in a sousaphone. Also, if one was in the market for a BBb tuba that could be played ...

Re: alphorn

Thanks to everyone for participating in this discussion. The ‘need’ thread got me thinking and I’ve decided to delay this project for now. I have enough info to work with should the ‘need’ arise someday. I’m going to make do with what I already have and that’s a good thing. :) Cheers and later for no ...

Re: I don't *need* this...

The question you should answer is, "does this tuba bring me pleasure (a smile to my face) when I play it?" if it does, you can afford it and you have space, then the answer is keep it. It's that simple. For more of us, playing tuba is not about need because we are not making a living by playing. We ...

Re: alphorn

I stumbled upon that video earlier today. Cool. The pics are still on Dan’s site: http://thevillagetinker.com/Misc%20stuff.htm (scroll down a bit) I’m looking at this as a possible way to play an unmuted low brass instrument without having the bell anywhere near my head. Years of euphonium and tuba p ...

Re: alphorn

Yikes! I was thinking about how I might acquire/build a valve section. I assume that a horn in F# with a crook to play in F would be a better bet and the valve set could then take the place of the crook. I see that one of the Thomann brand horns in F has the option of a separate ‘leadpipe’ section to ...

Horn Trader had Blessing herald trumpets from this event for sale several months ago. Looks like they are gone now.
