Re: Observations — YamaYork and Adams F

Mr. Jacobs had the throat drilled out a bit on the mouthpiece that was copied. Apparently, sometime after the original CB mouthpiece was made, Warburton found another example that had not been altered, and that is the TG2. I think the 3 and 4 are versions of the smaller one that was sent to Kelly ...

Re: Observations — YamaYork and Adams F

This thing is stupid-big, like Holton Revelation 52 big. But it works well. Shostakovich 5 went pretty dang well Saturday night. https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-G7PbsMb/0/FcnxKDBs26p7skXWHFFnd5NK66hFnjzGtMmF8Pjvb/O/i-G7PbsMb.jpg https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-q5rCLDf/0 ...

Re: Reviews of my YamaYork and Adams F

Okay, testing mouthpieces in your home on big tubas can give you “garbage data”. I knew this, but became temporarily stupid in this case. The Rose Solo would be a super choice if I needed to use the above-middle-C register on this tuba, or the pedal range when in a quintet or other chamber setting. I ...

Re: Reviews of my YamaYork and Adams F

The mouthpiece I am using for most stuff on the 826 is an old (1979) MIRAFONE ROSE MODEL SOLO That I bought alongside a MIRAFONE ROSE MODEL ORCHESTRA . I got the larger one from my mom as a "stocking stuffer" for Christmas 1979. I used some Christmas gift $$$ to pick up the Solo that the music store ...

Re: Reviews of my YamaYork and Adams F

Just heard back from the fellow who handles this instrument (amongst many other things, of course) for Yamaha. He has agreed to give me information regarding the history of this model, so I plan on writing up a sort of interview to see how much I can learn. I also *might* try to do a Zoom interview ...

Any Direct Comparisons of HB10 and Adams F?

This is addressed to people who have OWNED these horns, meaning BOTH one of the HB instruments as well as one of the Adams versions. I know that this is probably such a small pool of people that it may not even exist, but I'm going to ask, all the same… Is anyone here able to draw direct c ...

Re: Short Reviews for Those Who Keep Bringing it Up…

Curious about that 3rd valve high A on the Yamaha. On my students who play the 641, I have them play the problematic G 2nd valve. Just as in tune, less tubing to blow through, and a clearer note. Did you experiment with that? Also, my new Eastman 534 has the same 234 flatness. I might try a shallow ...

Re: Short Reviews for Those Who Keep Bringing it Up…

The previous 826 owner would smile at your review - and choice of mouthpiece for that instrument. He wasn't afraid to try new things and landing on that 826 for as long as he did is telling as to how good a horn it is. What did he use on it? And how different is my experience with it compared with ...

Observations — YamaYork and Adams F

Yamaha YCB-826S Intonation — Almost, but not quite, point-and-shoot. Bottom line G is dead on. The Cs all line up. In fact, the entire open series is really excellent. Problem 23 combo — Not bad at all, with bottom space Ab and the Eb below the staff tending toward their normal flaws, but being bet ...

Re: Holton 345 Redux

After three weeks of a nasty case of our global good friend Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and three weeks of slow recuperation, I had to have surgery on my sinuses. This was done on Thursday the 14th and I have been down with all of the recovery mess since. I have another week and a half before I am ...

Re: King 2-Valved GG Contra —> 5-Valved CC Tuba

This thing is not cooperating at all. I need to box it up and set it aside for now. I have to prep and sell my Holton and Kurath, so this one, while being worked on, is not being worked on all that much.

Re: Kurath/Willson F Tuba — Adding a 6th Valve

Okay, so I finally found this old thread. As with my other two (Holton and King) it is time for a necro-bump. So this tuba also will be up for sale as soon as I finish it. I have to re-do some major work now that I have performed both a solo and a quintet recital on it and better know what I want ...

Re: Holton 345 Redux

Yes, I did. I just hope I'm man enough to wield it to good effect.

It is not as *barbarous* as my Holton (or perhaps I have not yet figured out that part) but it is *very* good with excellent intonation, a low range that is just wonderful, and a high range equal to my Adams F.

Re: Holton 345 Redux

I just stumbled across this comparison photo of one of Joe's BBb 345 bugles with how Bob Rusk cut mine. This is after some lead-filled rebending, and some major re-tapering to the cut ends to make it line up this well. It was a cast iron "female dog" getting these poorly cut parts to fit together ...

Re: Holton 345 Redux

WARNING: Necro Thread Resurrection I am putting this tuba up for sale as soon as I have it fully ready. To be honest: I'm not exactly sure what "fully ready" means. I do not know how far I want to take this. I might lacquer it (or at least the bugle) as others do not share my love for the look of ...
