Re: 1971 Mirafone 186 CC — A Continuation

I have actually been pretty busy this past week with five BQ gigs. The weather has been crappy when I can go outside to work, and when it is nice I am at the stupid gig. Then, when I get home it is dark and the temp is too low to sit out there for very long. So this week has been a real bust, 186 ...

Re: College Canceled Band Class

Has the class been done away with or merely canceled due to the virus? Your post makes it sound as though the school has decided to do away with much of the music program permanently. Is this the case, or is this a temporary thing? This is an important distinction.

Re: Best Silver Polish?

You need to try Tarni-Shield by 3M. Great stuff. For any longtime users of this product who read this, the bottle changed recently, and the product is now marketed by 3M as a part of its Scotchguard line. It is the same product that came out in the 1970s, though. Tarni-Shield used to be sold by a ...

HA!

Actually, this thread is two years old and very long. It died at TN and I was encouraged to continue it here as I continued the build.

Re: LA CL: 186 BBb

Okay Hear me out, especially to all the techs on this forum. What if you bought this and a jinbao 186 clone. You cut the Miraphone rotors to CC and put together what fits? Miraphone 186 5U for -2,500? I am sort of doing this right now. I have a 1971 BBb I have cut to CC, and I have rescued the ...

Well, if the other one comes out well then it won't matter which thread this is. https://media.tenor.com/images/c326634b553a8ad20c6142592d8fe01d/tenor.gif The very first statement in this thread is below… Okay, so I have been salvaging my old TN thread on the two 186 tubas. One day (I hope) it will b ...

Re: 1971 Mirafone 186 CC — A Continuation

It is the factory CC and not the one I cut. I used it on some gigs recently and now can get back to finishing it. (It is a real player, too.) Other than the new leadpipe, the rest of the work is either cosmetic, alignment of outer branches, or cleanup. The other horn will get its own thread at some ...

Re: Kalison 2000 with trigger instead of 5th valve?

There is nothing unusual in that bell damage. It is very straightforward work to fix that to a very high state, rim wire included — if you are experienced at working on tuba bells. If this were on my bench I would remove the bell and roll it out on a Fast Eddie or burnish it over a bell iron, and t ...

A swimming pool/hot tub company will sell it, too. You use a lot of it if you have an in-ground pool.

Re: POLL: shorty/fatty (York-like) Holton B-flat tuba with 19-inch bell...

I am entertaining the idea of a 6th valve on the BBb 186 wall hanger that I have cut to CC. If I can ever get back to work on the multitudinous cracks in the bottom bow and make it whole again, this might happen. I was thinking of putting it in the water key elbow below 4th as there is no bore ...

Re: Kalison 2000 with trigger instead of 5th valve?

I seem to remember the USAF band having those DS tubas in 1993. I also remember seeing the Marines with at least one Pro 2000 while on tour in 1994 or 1995. I think you might be correct, sir.

Re: Kalison 2000 with trigger instead of 5th valve?

The 4-valved BBb "Pro 2000" (actual model name) was a normal offering, despite the more popular seller being the 5-valved CC Pro 2000. It is not really a 6/4 horn, but a 5/4 with a large, quickly expanding bell. [I think martyneilan used to own one in CC, but it might have been the very different ...

Oh, ancient "Wade History", here! I studied the grooves right off my copy of that album. This takes me back to my first day playing the tuba. Great find, Brian! Thanks!

Re: 1971 Mirafone 186 CC — A Continuation

The "Great Nickel Silver PimpFest of 2020" is almost over. I had a gig this morning so I had to limit my work to something I could complete, clean up, and put away in only three hours. • separate old bell/top bow brace plates • disassemble 1st slide • cut and dress two new slide legs • build and alig ...

Re: 1971 Mirafone 186 CC — A Continuation

Today I hit a small snag that wasted almost two hours. Oh, well. That is about par for this course. I installed the nickel silver crooks for the 2nd slide and both of the 5th slides. I had to rebuild the 5th slide circuit to correct the wonky upper 5th angle that was sort of forced on me last time I ...

Re: 1971 Mirafone 186 CC — A Continuation

This covers my decision to NOT destroy a Miraphone brace but to use Jin Bao parts to copy the needed brace for the MTS. I also cleaned up a lot of mess and then installed three of the seven nickel silver crooks. Okay, on to the HornPorn® … I am making the replacement MTS brace to delete the huge one ...

Re: 1971 Mirafone 186 CC — A Continuation

By taking measurements from my Mack 410 I have discovered that a small error that I knew about when I committed it (in order to prevent my having to order more parts) is the main culprit, with that error terminating at a point that had been damaged. With that damage fixed the parts at that location ...
