Re: Finale is Dead - You Must Switch to Dorico
I feel lucky that I have held onto install disks for programs that I bought many years ago. I have finale 2000 on my computer. It works fine, although I like the previous version better. I refuse updates and registration. I would suggest tracking down old install CDs and a computer whiz to hack the ...

Re: Bell diameter, flare, taper, etc.
So last night the marching band held a preview show. The marching tubas sounded like fat Kazoo's!!! So horrible that my wifes first comment was "the new tubas sound awful!" Now some of it is the students under developed embochure; But, these are the same three students that played sousaphones last ...

Re: Bell diameter, flare, taper, etc.
The solution is to discontinue bazooka style marching tubas and to reinstate the sousaphone. I agree wholeheartedly. The bazookas belong in drum and bugle corps. But there's no arguing with band directors who want to leach everything they can from drum corps. How about doing something original. How ...

Re: Bell diameter, flare, taper, etc.
They are king something marching tubas. They are huge. Much bigger than the G contras I marched with. On the field, outdoors, I would much rather have more clarity and punch than tone color. Low brass always sounds like mud to me when I'm in the stands. Anyway. I didnt want to discuss what horns are ...

Bell diameter, flare, taper, etc.
I'm wondering about the effects of different varieties of the above mentioned features on a tuba. For this discussion, say you could try multiple variations on a single tuba. Anybody know of actual scientific research on this yielding measurable data? Frankentubaists experience swapping bells? I'm ...

Re: Playing with teeth (dental) braces - seeking advice
Two different dentists have told me that I have age-related bunching of my front lower teeth to the point where the hygenist has trouble getting between them for cleaning, and both have suggested invisalign. I did not know there were anchors involved -- thought it was like a series of clear ...

Re: budget magnetic dent removal set?
I used a thin plastic sheet between the magnet and horn.

Re: Temporarily switching from BBb to Eb
The above are excellent suggestions. I picked up a small Eb last year. Had never played one before. I was really surprised how easily I was able to switch. I thought it would be really difficult because when I switched to Cc in college, that was. For some reason the Eb just fell right in place. I ...

Re: Lacquer stripping: results
Here's what the slides look like after the accidental overnight soaking. Big difference. Oh well. Doing a whole horn this way though would be a pain in the rear. Going with real stripper for a whole horn probably is quicker and cheaper in that respect. And again, I dont know what type of coating was ...

Re: Lacquer stripping: results
I recently acquired an old euph that really just needed a good cleaning. I had pulled all the slides and put them in a bucket with dollar store calcium, lime and rust remover with 50/50 water. I accidentally left them overnight and quite a bit of the lacquer dissolved away. If left longer, I'm sure ...

Re: budget magnetic dent removal set?
Ok. I reviewed that post. I thought I had posted more about the magnet and dent ball. Sorry. I'll get some pictures of them up here when I get a chance. Anyway, my total cost was the purchase of the magnet. You could look for some small machine shops in your area (tool and die, etc) and stop in ask ...

Re: budget magnetic dent removal set?
I did this last year.... I bought a 250# fishing magnet off amazon for like $25. It has a eye bolt that threads into the back. I work in a machine shop and my boss gave me some old used gauge balls ( I think they can be bought for like $20 to 80 depending on size. McMaster carr) the 2" ball worked ...

Re: 3 valve compensating sousaphone
Question. Is it really necessary to do all that work to align the valves? Wouldn't they be playable as is? Just a different hand orientation for sousa. I also recall seeing a couple pictures of some late 1800s??? helicons with the valves oriented in such a way. Anyway, interesting idea. Worth a try ...

Re: Mouthpiece questions/experiences/etc.
In my situation, I have an old conn 120s and a similar, but much larger/deeper tuba exchange Rose model ( older version ). Among others. The Rose is fantastic down low but a struggle in the staff and not workable above. The 120s is essentially the opposite. I have been trying to find something in ...

Re: Eb tubas
Just my 2 cents.... If I had a do-over back to freshman semester.... I would stick with my Bbb for contrabass and an Eb for bass... and switched my degree to bachelor of music or directly to instrument repair.... Switching to Cc was really tough for me at that time and really had little benefit ...
