Re: Location of porting hole in Piston tuba

Folks - I do think that I would be able to create the hole. Thanks for all the tips in that regard. More important to me is how to find with some accuracy where the hole goes. I know it goes in the place where the piston closes off the branch. Is there a trick to finding that spot? LOL...I was typi...

Location of porting hole in Piston tuba

Hi all - I've got a VMI 3302 (4P1R) BBb that I wanted a a shop to vent the valves among some other work. I got a quote today from them and it was $40/piston. Too rich for me right now so I told them to skip that. Now I uses to be a reasonably adept machinist in a (very) past life, and have a decentl...

Re: Yamaclone F arrived!

https://on.soundcloud.com/ViH3G1dvbTwrorzw9 Yesterday I made a recording with the China Tuba. 1st-3rd Tuba is played with China F tuba, 4th part with my C tuba York style. Intonation is a bit of work, but the sound and playability is ok. For me, the mouthpipe angle is too low, I will definitely cha...

Intonation is good. 5th valve needs a little attention / adjustment. Pistons are smooth, quick, and quiet. 5th va...

Re: sorely underplayed wind band works

Giannini - Praeludium et Allegro. Beautiful piece. In my sophomore year in HS I played in the high school All-Star band at Western Michigan University. Would have been 1976. Revelli was the guest conductor. The Allegro starts with a wicked first clarinet line that our clarinets were having trouble w...

It's been my experience that he's reluctant to source spare parts for Macks, too.

My 410 is a decent horn for the money but I hate the linkages. They are really cheaply made and out of charactor with the rest of the horn. I ...

Something I would have never expected to see in a jazz band.

Re: Mack 421S opinions

I've got a Mack 410 (186 C copy) and I'm sharp on it, too. I can't pull the slide out enough to play in tune with it sometimes. I do wonder if that was a cost-saving measure at the factory, to use a little pipe as they could get away with. Or, maybe I just play too sharp.

Re: External microphone for Iphone

Since nobody has mentioned it yet, for iPhone specifically, the Shure MV88 works well, and it's near your price. Here's one on sale: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1251142-REG/shure_mv88_a_motiv_mv88_digital_stereo.html/ There's an app to adjust the stereo imaging and equalization. You can ...

Re: External microphone for Iphone

I've got a Shure MV88. It's really good for recording groups in stereo and of all the mics I own, it's the quietest. And it comes with some nice free audio and video apps. Bought it for $80 on ebay and have been very happy with it. The only downside is I have to remove the phone case to make it fit.

Re: Higher than the top of the beat

I have never ascribed to the notion that tubas need to be ahead of the beat to reach the audience the same time as the rest of the band. The speed of sound is the same whether you play tuba or piccolo. I think that this all started with band directors who have tuba sections with response problems. I...

Ebay seller grwinds616

Has anyone ever bought anything from ebay seller grwinds616 and actually had him/her answer questions?
