Re: "winning" a job
I tend to wonder if orchestras are dying because those who make the decisions as to what they program (on "classical" concerts) always feel it necessary to mix in at least one piece of poop into every concert (and pieces of poop are not classics, therefore not classical). People don't like ...

Re: "stuffy"
It's much harder for me to play this tuba than to play mine.
I don't like the way this tuba plays compared to what I'm used to.
Check this tuba for stuffed toys in the bell!
My problems playing this tuba can't be my fault, it's the tuba's!

Re: Embouchure shifts
I don't have any answers, but I have a test for you. I often finish my warmup with a slur from the pedal BBb on my BBb tuba to the BBb above the staff and back down. Doing that will certainly reveal any embouchure shift you're using. Using your lips alone while staying in the same place on the ...

Re: Vinyl bell rim tubing?
For what it's worth, my Rudolf-Meinl Bayreuth BBb came with a vinyl bell rim tubing, and I've left it on. I never set it on its bell, though, so keeping it there isn't a problem. At the very least it serves as a tiny bumper should the bell rim contact something hard, like another bell.

Re: New Music In the Folders!
I love Reed! "Armenian Dances" Part 1 or Part 2? They are very different pieces. Both are a lot of fun to play, but Part 2 is the one I prefer, tuba-wise. Part One is what we are rehearsing. After extensive research, :red: meaning I looked at the folder containing all of the scores! We'll be ...

Re: RIP Dave Wolpe
That's a shame. I can't say that I knew him, but the group I read jazz charts with once a month certainly uses many of his arrangements. My condolences to his family and friends. I concur! I read those charts with Jerry for many years before my knees and back precluded my participation in this true ...

Re: Conflicted about tuba choice
I understand the problems identified in this thread because at 79 years of age I've dealt with them. My 4v R/M Bayreuth '5/4' BBb hasn't seen a rehearsal or performance for the past 4 years initially because a new CR/V's trunk space contained a 'step-up' that made loading the large Jacob Winter case ...

Re: surgery aftermath
Now that this thread is sloshing around a bit, I'll add my $.02. I trained as a surgeon back in the dark ages (1968-1972), but abandoned it after I knew I wasn't passionate enough about it to maintain my skills. Hence I've been on the operator's side of this issue, and as of May 24 I got to ...

Re: “Swiss Army Knife” tuba
Nobody asked me, but I'm going to chime in anyway.
The key, ineluctable ingredient to any tuba being a "Swiss Army Knife" tuba is, and always has been, the player.

Re: double/triple tonguing
Come Monday our Community Concert Band is playing Jay Bocook's arr. of G. Holst's MARS from THE PLANETS. The conductor beats it from the start right at 150 bpm. My tongue has never been fast enough to single-tongue triplets at that tempo, so I'm triple tonguing all of the 5/4 initial identical 25 ...

The best exercises I've found to burn the roll-out, roll-in embouchure into muscle memory are still these.
The one additional factor needed to hit the high notes correctly is 'fast air'. I keep forgetting that one.

A high energy, hilarious, fireworks-laden, bravura show! Incredibly entertaining. They shouldn't be missed if you get a chance to see/hear them.
Sorry I missed you, Jordan. My phone was silenced. I was in the 7th row to the right of center.

Some perspective distortion makes this not the best, but here is the Bayreuth vs Miraphone 191-5v gold brass: https://www.gwwilkins.org/temp-images/Bayreuth-Miraphone191.png I used the 191 for our Community Concert Band Holiday Concert in December. The depth of this instrument on 'Polar Express ...

Re: 5/4 Bb Tuba
How does the Rudy 5/4.BBb fit in with the Miraphone a, size-wise? The Rudy “5/4” is a really big tuba. I think it’s as big, if not bigger than most 6/4 tubas. The only thing bigger is the Rudy "6/4". Which is probably more like 7 or 8/4. The Rudi 5/4 isn’t bigger that a 6/4 BAT, but it’s a kaisertub ...

Re: Jakob Winter Case Experience?
Summers in college (1962-1964) I worked in a flour mill loading boxcars with a hand truck: https://i.etsystatic.com/11170123/r/il/35c4de/2123544458/il_794xN.2123544458_f4vq.jpg You don't pull these beasts when loaded with 1/2 ton of flour! Heaven forbid it you run it off the dock (which I did while ...

Are you reporting that the sort of “sleek” design (which includes contoured sides) defines that it is difficult to keep it up on the parallel rails of a hand-truck (as opposed to MTS cases, which feature mostly flat sides)? ... Re: Jakob Winter Case Experience?
My Rudy-Meinl Bayreuth came with an appropriately sized (BIG) Jakob Winter case. It's fairly lightweight considering its size and does a fine job of protecting my tuba. HOWEVER, don't plan on lugging this thing several blocks, as I've had to do on a few occasions. You can't balance the load a la a ...
