Just out of curiosity, were the Bb charts in treble or bass clef? Treble clef tuba parts is Bb are quite common, but bass clef parts in Bb . . . well, I’ve never seen one.

If your Eb friend was playing a Bb treble part on his Eb, he was transposing.

I leave them all out . . . except . . . a silver plated euphonium.

I don’t like silver plated horns because they tarnish. But the euph doesn’t tarnish as quickly if I keep it in the case.

A nuisance, but less of a nuisance than polishing.

I use lots of lamp oil, on the valves and inside the tubing. There is a downside: lots of oil going IN means lots of oil coming OUT. You have to be careful about where it is going. If you dump oil onto a dark stage floor it can be hard to see. People aren’t looking for it and it is slippery.

I prefer a light grease to oli, on the theory that it is less likely to migrate to the valves.

In the past I have used silicone grease and it works fine, although no better than any number of other greases.

Not having seen the part, I went to the first rehearsal with my Eb, figuring it would be adequate, which it was. However, your recommendation for the big tuba is correct for sure.
