Re: 9-foot B-flat valved brass: flugabones/valve trombones/baritones/euphoniums

Adams was what we would call in the tuba world a "Hasselblad Artist". The factory gave them to him. I'm glad you posted that, because it reinforces my point. If there had not been demand for high-end cameras beyond the needs of the professionals, it wouldn't have been in the company's int...

Re: footrest

Has anyone or does anyone use a footrest for this purpose? Yes, I thought it would work with my euphonium. I tried it for a while, but felt like I couldn't breathe as well. I bought a QHR lap pad and never looked back. But, after reading your post, I thought maybe I would try it with my Eb tuba, si...

Re: 9-foot B-flat valved brass: flugabones/valve trombones/baritones/euphoniums

About 40 years ago, I read an interview of the photographer Ansel Adams. He said that one of his biggest sources of support in his profession was the amateur who just has to buy a Nikon or a Hasselblad. Because of the unrealistic demand for these high-end cameras, the manufacturers can take advantag...

Re: abbreviation/acronym/whatever for "C tuba for college"...??

Tangent alert . . . Back in the early 90s, I worked for The Princeton Review as an MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test) tutor. I was told that, at that time, approximately 45-50,000 people took the MCAT each year, vying for the approximately 15,000 openings in U.S. medical schools each year. Not a...

Re: Frank holton eflat tuba?

I will answer your first question: I played BBb for 50 years, and really liked it, but needed to downsize because of shoulder trouble. Initially, I bought a euphonium and enjoy it a lot, but the notion of an Eb began poking at me. So I picked up an Eb about 2 years ago, and love it. I wish I had beg...

Re: What key for general use?

I will add my vote to what appears to be the growing consensus: BBb is the practical choice. I would offer an additional suggestion, as well. If you are thinking about expanding your options later, consider eventually adding a euphonium to your toolkit. The learning curve coming from a BBb is fairly...

Re: Polka/Oktoberfest music

The key term for an Internet search is blasmusik. There are a lot of ensembles in Europe that are doing folk stuff, including polkas, with just brass. You might be able to connect with a European publisher. I would also really encourage using Musescore. They have a ton of stuff already arranged for ...

Farewell, offensive ophicleide,
Your epitaph is chiseled:
"I died of ophicleidicide.
I tried, alas, but fizzled!"
This gets even better when you consider that the word "fizzled" originated as Medieval slang relating to flatulence.

Re: Musings On Learning E♭ Tuba

A few years ago, I sold my BBb tuba and bought a euphonium. Then, a couple years later, bought a very old Eb tuba, while still playing the euph. Bouncing back and forth between fingerings was messing with my elderly brain. One of my online mentors, Dave Werden, said that treble clef is actually a lo...

Re: Question about slide lubrication

Bach synthetic slide gel on the slides . . . I am not at all happy with the performance of the slide gel. It is very hard to squeeze out of the bottle, is very sticky feeling, almost impossible to get off when it ends up on surfaces where it doesn’t belong A far more generous description than I wou...

Re: Very small F tuba

I'm looking for something that's roughly an F baritone. There isn't one. A compensating baritone or euphonium with the 4th valve depressed is the closest thing to emulate it. Is it potentially stuffy? Yes, but don't those strange little travel tubas have their own problems? Also, paraphrasing Roger...

Lock the 4th valve down, and you have a baritone in F, complete with the cylindrical tubing giving a trombone-esque sound.

I completely expected non-useful information right off the bat... :smilie8:  ...including things such as "which types of bike tires are best for all-terrain riding", etc. To properly address this, the real question is, "Does your peloton include a bass trombonist?" Oth...

Re: French C Tuba VS Euphonium

Since then the size of the Euphonium seems to have doubled. With some dramatic effect on sound: yes, of course they are louder. But when played softly they are still "fat" in sound and offer less possibilities of colour. In comparison to the tuba sizing the Euphs grew up to 6/4 This is a ...

Re: Matching a Mouthpiece to a Tuba (rather than chops)

After reading these posts, I had to do some experimentation. I have a small shank Eb that I have been using a Wick 5 on for some time now. The tuba's leadpipe is actually a recent retrofit which replaced the original leadpipe that was severely damaged. The Wick seats rather deeply, so it may not be ...
