Re: Making Your Own Tools
My daughter is playing clarinet and I am trying to learn to do some basic repairs. I couldn't find a place to buy the long screwdrivers I wanted so DIY it is: https://notabs.org/tubaforum/homemadeTools/DSC02266.jpg https://notabs.org/tubaforum/homemadeTools/DSC02267.jpg https://notabs.org/tubaforum ...

Re: Solder clean up on silver plate
Jewelry supply shops sell solder masking mud. It's a pain to use though. If there is a big glob, heat it and blast with compressed air. Then heat it again and soak up the remains with dry cotton.

Re: Making Your Own Tools
I see a tool made from rebar. You win, even though this is not a contest. HAHAHA!!! This is great stuff! I have been collecting scrap metal for years. When I die, whoever has to clean out my garage is going to wonder about me. I still have some stainless steel tubing scrap from a 1977 valve ...

Re: Making Your Own Tools
My daughter's Yamaha school tuba was leaking where the mouth pipe attached. I made this to get the nut off for reinstallation with teflon tape: https://notabs.org/tubaforum/homemadeTools/DSC02205.jpg Homemade knurling tool. I bought the wheels and made the rest. A 4 jaw chuck was used to cut the ...

Re: I need a small project…
I have the same exact tool box. I bought it in the late 1970's. Craftsman, right? (even though it didn't follow the Craftsman color scheme).

Re: brass instrument finish aesthetics
Everyone knows the best tubas have multiple finishes to imporve sound and intonation. Let's not forget it must have a lot of saturn water keys too. Nickel silver inner and outer slides, red brass leadpipe, silver plated bell, raw brass bugle, etc. Throw in an AGR, heavyweight mouthpiece, a tone ...

Re: Piston Questions
It hadn't occurred to me that the tolerances required for good pistons would need some of the more specialized tooling I've heard about and CNC machines. I was hoping maybe you could make piston fabrication happen with a manual lathe and enough trial and error. I figured if anyone had it would be ...

Re: Dent magnet balls
That is a good price. I paid $26.45 for a single I bought late 2019.
Just noticed the Amazon description says "NOT magnetic". I highly doubt that's true.

Re: a riddle
I remember watching that show when it first came out. My mother told me she read that new technology was developed that allow the overlaying of the cartoon like graphics. I measured the first few frequencies best I could: 103.5 140 186 208 246 276 308 272 418 492 628 So sure enough, it matches the ...

Hello Matt, it's written in plain C. I'm old school. With an 8 core processor, it can easily update the model and rebuild the display 60 times per second.

Re: Tuner recommendations
I spent months writing a strobe tuner app for Windows. Unlike the commercial ones, mine doesn't use FFT or any other digital audio techniques. It's a more direct emulation. It's true to my memories of the mechanical strobe tuner in my 1970's band class. I think it's the most realistic software ...

Re: What is your preferred "recipe" to clean a tarnished tuba?
I’ve never come anywhere close to going through silver plating anywhere on any of my silver instruments (even though typical modern-era plating on silver instruments is much thinner than that apply to instruments a century ago) but again: I couldn’t imagine using some gooey abrasive hand polish on ( ...

Re: What is your preferred "recipe" to clean a tarnished tuba?
Here is a progression of photos that include removal of pitting and scratches in addition to final polishing. The pictures show the same strap polishing as in the video above. It's a trumpet so hand polishing the whole thing is feasible. I can't imaging doing an entire tuba this way. Red rouge is a ...

I'm so old I remember when electrical outlets had only two terminals. They weren't even polarized. You could put a plug in either way.

12 minutes of LaCucaracha
Here is 12 minutes of LaCucaracha I recorded today. That's about as long as my YBB-104 can go before water starts bubbling in the main tuning slide. I believe the arrangement used is for C instruments, so this is a whole step flat. My lips were good today, so this is the best I can play at this ...

Re: Another Mic Placement Trial - Comments Welcomed
Wow, your playing is so perfect and your tone is so mellow. Those high notes sound effortless. All your mic locations give good results. I have been experimenting with mic location because my tone is bad, sometimes shockingly bad. We changed our house from all carpet to all hard flooring. Now the ...

@Beyond16 A few questions if you'll indulge me So looking at your pic you prefer 5000 CST? What is your ratio for mixture? With what recipe you've settled on, what consistency results? Herman's tuning slide grease vs the ultra slide grease (super thick white stuff)? Thanks The 5000 CST is from my ...
